In the summer of 2005, a four-man Navy SEAL team consisting of Lt. Michael Murphy, and petty officers Danny Dietz, Matthew Axelson and Marcus Luttrell departed for a reconnaissance mission high in the Hindu Kush Mountains near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The team’s target was Ahmad Shah, a local terrorist leader with close ties to Bin Laden who led a group of insurgents referred to as the “Mountain Tigers”. Five days after insertion, Luttrell was the only SEAL to make it out alive.
LoneSurvivor.net is dedicated to the heroes of Operation Redwing (Red Wings), a military operation on June 28, 2005 that cost the lives of 19 U.S. Servicemen in the remote Hindu Kush Mountains of Northeastern Afghanistan. The story is chronicled in the thrilling best-selling book “Lone Survivor,” by Marcus Luttrell, the only surviving Navy SEAL team member of the operation. The book is slated to be developed into a future motion picture under the guidance of well-known director Peter Berg.
Lone Survivor is the story of Operation Redwing and Luttrell’s amazing story of endurance and survival in the aftermath of a ferocious firefight that led to what was then the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history.
The purpose of the Lone Survivor.net website is to provide a record and a tribute to those American heroes who bravely died defending their country on that fateful day in the wilds of Afghanistan. It will also be a gathering place for all who wish to discuss the book, the upcoming movie, anything related to Operation Redwing, the War in Afghanistan, Navy SEALs and the U.S. Military in general.
